Rolex Submariner

When Rolex launched the 50th Anniversary Edition of its Submariner, it was the collector's community that awarded it the title of the first green Submariner with green livery. Rolex did not name the green submarines Kermits, but watch collectors coined them Rolex Kermits. 

With the Submariner 16610LV Kermit, which was launched in 2003 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the model, most collectors named the new Submariner Date 126610 LV Kermit. The article we wrote about Submariner price may be of interest to you.

What surprised me was that Rolex had the green Submariner in the program for so long. Although the standard Rolexes Sub-marine Date 16610 does not cut it, the maxi dial is a very good alternative, especially for those with a high-quality watch. 

It makes sense that Rolex should introduce the green bezel for its 50th anniversary, the new colour giving the Submariner a completely new look. This is a big deal, because, until the GMT Master series, none of the tool watches manufactured by Rolexes had ever had colorful bezels. Among the notable changes, the engraved Rolex is not present on the outside of the dial. This is negligible, the most immediate feature being the addition of a Swiss dial - a dial at six o'clock with a small crown emblem symbolising the new movement. The black bezel insert, which appeared on the first Rolex Submariner, is emblazoned with the Ref. 16610LV, is beaded in a distinctive green color and features a black dial with a white bezel and insert. You can read more about Rolex perpetual Datejust price in our linked article.

As we mentioned briefly, the Submariner 16610LV does not have a green bezel, but everything about the watch is as pristine as ever. This model is not revolutionary; conservative brands like Rolex have been using bright, bold colors like green for years, with the exception of their Kermit Oyster and Perpetual Sub Mariners. What makes this model special is that it is equipped with a Rolex Green bezel, which is now a recognised colour that is immediately associated with this brand. The role of the black dial and the insert, as well as the white insert and the green color, indicate that this is not revolutionary, nor was it the first Rolex to have a green bezel, nor the only one. More information can be found in our Sky Dweller retail price article.

In addition to the beautiful green bezel, the Rolex Kermit Submariner has its own dial, which is exclusive to this model. The addition of the green bezel is a subtle design change, where the role of a black dial and the case, as well as the use of white and green case, have evolved somewhat, but have mainly brought about subtle design changes. 

This means that although the modern Rolex Submariner watch was launched a few decades ago, it still looks very similar to its predecessor. The dial of this Rolexes Sub Mariner 126610 LV is less revolutionary and evolutionary in the case, but the changes are even more subtle here. Rolex has created a stunning style for eternity with the green bezel that gives this watch the nickname Kermit. Although the change is subtle and the watch itself is just another stunning effort in style, it is still one of the most beautiful watches on the market. 

The Rolex Submariner, introduced in the early 1950s, covered a track that most competitors would follow. The Sub-marine Date version has a date window at 3 o'clock, crowned by a cyclopean lens protruding from the sapphire crystal and shielding the dial. Today, both the Submariner Sub Mariner and the Submarine Date are equipped with Rolexes calibres 3230 and 3235, respectively, and feature the same stainless steel case and dial as their predecessors. 

If you look at the old Rolex Submariner reference, you will notice a hole drilled into the side of the case. Rolex celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Submariner in 2009 by launching the new Submariner Date 16610LV, with its distinctive black dial, which was the last watch to be reissued in 2010 with a random serial number. The Rolex Kermit model was the first version of the Green Submariner to be launched in the US and Europe as part of the Kermit watch line. In 2010 the green Rolexes Sub Mariner Hulk was taken out of production, replaced by the newer Submarine Date 41 mm and in 2011 by a red version.
